Czech Republic – World Countries for Kids

Brief History

The Czech Republic was first inhabited by the Celts, who gave it the Latin name of Bohemia. In about 100 AD, the Germanic Marcomanni people conquered the area. Then the Slavic people lived in the area during the 6th century. During the 9th century, the Moravians formed the Great Moravian Empire, which included what is now the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and parts of Poland and Germany. In 950 Bohemia became a part of the Holy Roman Empire, and a succession of many kings ruled the land during this time. In the 1800s, the Austrians and the Habsburg Empire took control of the area. After WWI, the country of Czechoslovakia was formed, and at the beginning of WWII, Czechoslovakia became a part of Germany. The Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, restoring Czechoslovakia’s freedom. The Czechs and Slavics decided to split up the country into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The Czech Republic kept the design of the Czechlosovakian flag. It consists of a white stripe, a red stripe, and a blue triangle on the left-hand side.

The Czech Republic is a landlocked country located in Central Europe. It is bordered by Poland, Germany, Slovakia, and Austria. The country is almost entirely surrounded by mountains, and the interior consists of low hills and plateaus.
